Forecasters across the US are gearing up for what could become Hurricane Helene. The National Hurricane Center's most recent updates have shown a potential Category 3 hurricane hitting the inner northwest Florida coast near Fishy Creek on Thursday or Friday. With that potential present, what does this mean for us here in Western Kentucky? Rain.
Early model runs (and these are subject to change) shows 2-5 inches of rain over our general area. Drought conditions, though, have lessened in spots thanks in part to a slow moving cold front this week. Still, the potential for more rain is there over the weekend.
A "Fujiwhara Effect" is possible once Helene gets over Southern Indiana as the remnants interact with a surface low over Arkansas. This could slow the system down more leading to higher rain totals in our area. The potential for severe weather for our area is low, but not completely out of the question. Most of the impact will be in the form of rain and generally breezy conditions. What does this mean for outdoor events? You'll need to monitor the weather as we get closer to the weekend and most especially once Helene makes landfall.
Star 107.3 will continue to monitor the weather as it continues to evolve into this weekend.
