Muhlenberg Arts Council Hosts Annual Young Artist Showcase at Thistle Cottage

Writer: Michael DavisMichael Davis

FEBRUARY 24, 2025 GREENVILLE, KY- The Muhlenberg Arts Council, in partnership with Muhlenberg County Public Libraries, is set to host its annual Young Artist Showcase at Thistle Cottage throughout the month of March. This highly anticipated event will feature the artistic creations of ten students per grade (Grades K-8) from each of the county's schools, celebrating the talents of young artists within the community.

The showcase will be accessible to the public for the entire month, providing a platform for students to display their work and receive well-earned recognition. Additionally, two open house events will be held to highlight the artwork: the first on March 3rd for Grades K-3 and the second on March 4th for Grades 4-8. Both events will run from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

Students with pieces on display will each receive a certificate of recognition, while ribbons will be awarded to the top three pieces in each grade level.

This annual event is inspired by Youth Art Month (YAM), a nationwide initiative that underscores the importance of art education in schools. Established in 1961, YAM serves as a platform to acknowledge the unique skills that art fosters in students, including self-expression, appreciation of artistic works, cooperation, and critical thinking. The Council for Art Education (CFAE), a key sponsor of YAM, has embraced the theme, “Start with Art, Learn for Life,” emphasizing the lifelong benefits of early artistic exposure.

Muhlenberg Arts Council Coordinator Sean Mooningham expressed excitement about the event's growing success. “We had to split into two open house events to handle the crowds, which is a fantastic problem to have,” Mooningham stated. “It is one of my favorite events every year, seeing the excitement on the students’ faces as they search the displays for their works of art. Having the chance to show off their pieces to their friends and family throughout the month is such a thrill for the students, and is tremendously rewarding to their instructors, Arts Council members, and Library employees.”

The Thistle Cottage, located at 122 S Cherry Street in Greenville, will host the exhibit during regular business hours: Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Community members are encouraged to visit and celebrate the artistic achievements of Muhlenberg County's young talents.
