Former Longest Elementary Property Getting a Facelift

Some may have already noticed, but portions of the original Longest Elementary building are coming down. Late last week, removal of the portable classrooms was completed and on Tuesday, removal of the "4th grade" wing commenced. Some parts are staying though!

According to Chief Financial Officers & Facilities Director Eric Bletzinger, the front portion of the building will be demolished and turned into extra parking. A new entrance will be constructed for the back portion of the builidng that will remain. That back portion, completed in the 1970's, will house the schools head start program. Bletzinger added that portion of the original school will also include preschool and daycare facilities for Longest Elementary. A new playgound will be added in the front next to the 'new' Longest Elementary building. In addition, new green space will be created for outdoor enjoyment by staff and students.

Longest Elementary was originally built in the late 1960's to feed Muhlenberg Central High School. It was named after Amy Longest. The grade school, along with Bremen, Central City, & Greenville is one of the only remaining original schools in the county educational system. The demolition and renovation process is expected to be fully complete in 2025.
